Scenes of Beauty:

Robert Rubel is a natural-light nature photographer with decades of experience shooting both 35mm and medium format cameras. His photographic purpose is to create images that give viewers an unusual (often interpretive) view of a scene.

These photographs are not accidents; they are outgrowths of his photographic philosophy, a philosophy that has evolved over years of study and practice. Some of the key elements of his philosophy can be summarized as follows:

  • A camera licenses one to observe and delight in the world. Photography slows down his life and allows the photographer to take time to “smell the roses.” The process of photography is more important than the outcome. (This is why he uses manual cameras: they slow him down such that he can see.)
  • Photographs succeed for one reason. Because the photograph was well seen.
  • Ruthlessly simplify and clarify. Poor images mostly result from two common causes: uncertainty of intent and including too much material.
  • The difference between a good photograph and a great photograph is measured in centimeters.
  • Images should enable viewers to see the world in a way they may have overlooked.
